Sustainable Christmas decorations at the embassy

Five design students are working on decorating the Ambassador’s residence for the holiday season using recycled and recyclable materials.

Each year the Ambassador and the Embassy staff host an exclusive Christmas party for contacts from Congress, the White House, the military, media and think tanks. This year the party will highlight COP15 and the battle against climate change.

Two students from the Danish Design School in Copenhagen and three students from Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington, DC have been working since the summer on a concept for sustainable Christmas decorations of the Ambassador’s residence.

The students from the Danish Design School are Louise Havndrup and Tirsdag Ohrt, and from Corcoran College of Art + Design Caryn Cramer, Breeze Giannasio, and Brittany Watson.

With the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference in mind, this year’s Christmas installation is decidedly green. Solar LED lights, soy candles, recycled and seed-infused paper, Cradle to Cradle approved fabrics, non-VOC paint and many more green efforts make up the installation. All items will be recycled and/or reused.

The transnational design effort weaves together concerns for sustainability with Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale “The Snow Queen.”
