Seminar: Infrastructuring & strategies of democratization

Seminar: Infrastructuring & strategies of democratization

14th of April at The Danish Design School. The aim of the seminar is to  discuss the role of design and design research in participatory design projects that deal with social, cultural and technological innovation in the public sphere.

Through three PhD seminars The Danish Design School presents an exposition of the current trends within design research that explores the boundaries and conjunctions between design research and different areas of social sciences.

About the 1st seminar: April 14th

In this domain the question of what is being designed and for whom can be a challenge to grasp, as designers and design researchers deal with actors, relations, technologies and issues that are constantly in the making in public spaces. One way of approaching this is by working with infrastructures of innovation. The seminar will discuss and investigate the concept of infrastructuring, with reference to among others Leigh Star, Björgvinsson and Ehn, as an object and a strategy of design and democratization, and address a number of central questions in relation to this.

Presenters: Erling Björgvinsson and Peter Danholt

The seminar series consists of three seminars. Each seminar will consist of lectures by one or two invited speakers and a plenary discussion followed by a workshop.

A compilation of relevant literature will be disseminated before each seminar – and it is expected that all participants have read before each seminar.

To apply for participation in the seminar series, each participant must submit a short abstract of no more than 300 words. The abstract should position your research in relation to the seminar and include a statement of interest, i.e. how and why the participant expects the seminar series to be relevant with regards to her thesis project or research agenda. The abstract will serve as an application.

For applicants who are accepted for participation: We ask of you to prepare and submit an extended abstract of 1-3 pages before the first seminar. In addition to the extended abstract, we ask you to submit a short description of your PhD project, as well as questions that you would like to ask and discuss within the seminars.
