Research
Continuously my research has been about understanding design work in practice and to develop valuable ways of working that open the design work and the design process for stakeholders outside the traditional design team. The research include the ability to synthesis various concerns in a design process.
As an example the objective of my Ph.D. dissertation: "Event-Driven Product Development: Collaboration and Learning" was to develop valuable ways to conduct customer or user driven product development. Based on an action research approach I have experimented with various ways of organizing and facilitating projects where people with different competencies, responsibilities and interests could participate actively in product development projects. Focus has been on developing ways of working both internally in the organisation between the product development department, the marketing department and the sales department, and externally with customers and potential users. The dissertation describes a broad theoretical framework with focus on various aspects of product development and experiences from organising and facilitating events focusing on participatory inquiry and collaborative design in three commercial product development projects carried out at Danfoss. It involves exploration of the field of social interaction and process management in the product development process. The dissertation develops four specific issue streams; concurrent engineering, reflective practice in professional design, learning as a shared development process among members of design teams, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
