About the school

About the school

The School of Design , Bornholm forms the setting for a three-year advanced programme. The school is located in scenic surroundings on the east coast of the island of Bornholm and currently has approximately 70 students.

The school was founded in 1997. In 2010 the then Glass and Ceramics School on Bornholm merged with The Danish Design School, and changed its name to The Danish Design School, Bornholm.

The merger creates even better conditions for cooperation between the school on Bornholm and the school in Copenhagen. For students enrolled in the Bornholm school, this means a study programme with exciting perspectives, where the three years in Nexø involve challenges from inspiring visiting teachers, interdisciplinary activities and rich opportunities for developing your own understanding of your craft.

The School of Design, Bornholm is part of Centre for Glass and Ceramics at Royal Danish Academy, School of Design. We emphasize interdisciplinary relations with the school’s other centres, which generates new perspectives on business areas, career opportunities and craft competences.

Education objectives

On the basis of sound craft-based knowledge of the practical work with techniques and materials the programme aims to give the students qualifications on a high artistic level that enable them to shape and develop the craft of glass or ceramics. In their work with materials, techniques, form and theory, students must acquire the necessary technical, aesthetic and analytic qualifications for addressing tasks within glass or ceramics and related materials.
