Graduation Project
Rites of Passage

The Ibans were previously headhunters ruling the rivers of Borneo's rainforest. They live in a world of mystical deities, spirits, legendary heroes, dreams, bird augury, taboos, customs and rituals.

Rites of Passage is a collection inspired by their spirit world and rites of passage. The rites are key to surviving as they serve to appease the spirits.

For this collection I have experimented with mixing various textile techniques such as knits, prints, colour grading, draping and latch hooking. Throughout the collection a transformation is illustrated – and the individual pieces each visualize a development process.
In addition to an aesthetic experience, my goal is to convey to spectators a notion of the moods and feelings which I, through analyses and interpretation, associate with the Iban's spirit world and pivotal rites of passage.
