The Danish School of Design - Visual Communication 2009
Final Project
Typeface design and Danish national identity
How can a typeface express the essence of Denmark, its language and its national identity?
The identity of any particular entity such as a country is an exceedingly subjective notion. It can therefore often be hard to recognise one’s own identity. My final project attempts to find the heart of Danish identity and illustrate it through a specially designed typeface. Diatrics can give a language a unique appearance, so the creation of a typeface not only designed for a country, but the language itself, aids in legibility and creative flair in the final product. By highlighting certain characteristics found in the individual letterforms, as well as following a tradition that already existing in Danish type design helped achieve this. In this respect the final product, the typeface Dania, achieves the task of expressing an identity in both the overall design as well as in the specific characteristics when used in context.
