Research Projects
The working title of my PhD project is: "Danish Fashion. The Material Culture of Fashion, its Design Practice and Identity". In my project I explore what is Danish fashion from the theoretical perspective of new material culture theory. Within this theoretical frame I draw my attention to the works of the British anthropologist Daniel Miller and the French Sociologist Bruno Latour. From Miller I am inspired to perceive things and people as defined by each other and not as separate entities. Translated into my project this means that I am looking into the design practice of contemporary as well as historic Danish fashion designers in order to locate a definition of the identity of Danish fashion. From the works of Latour I find inspiration in his actor-network-theory and perceive Danish fashion as consisting of numerous amount of actors (this could be people, tings and immaterial phenomenon), all combined in networks unlimited to a given time and space.

With my project I intend to contribute to existing fashion research with a material culture perspective that integrate the material as well as the symbolic in its analytical perspective. And further, the results of the project should be able to systematically identify the design methods of Danish fashion. The project is part of Danmarks Designskole's research theme Design Theory and Methods and the PhD stipend is co-financed by Danmarks Designskole in collaboration with The Danish Museum of Decorative Arts.
